The Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) hosted a hurricane webinar for all grade 6 students from the four primary schools on island on Thursday, May 9th, 2019. The schools are St Augustine Roman Catholic, Brades, Light House Community Academy and Look Out.

The webinar was organized by the 2019 National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration(NOAA).

The purpose of the one (1) hour webinar was to raise understanding and awareness of hurricanes, hurricane hazards, and hurricane preparation amongst grade 6 students in advance of the 2019 North Atlantic hurricane season. Videos, visualizations, graphics, and other media were included to engage the students.

National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasters and AOC aircraft personnel spoke live to the students.

The webinar covered hurricane hazards, forecasting, observing hurricanes with aeroplanes and hurricane preparedness.

The webinar platform allowed NHC/NOAA personnel and HSS staff to answer student questions in real time during the webinar.

This webinar formed part of DMCA’s 2019 Hurricane Preparedness activities and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) Hurricane Awareness Tour.

The webinar was broadcast live from the Baton Rouge, LA stop of the Hurricane Awareness Tour.

This webinar is timely as Montserrat prepares for the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season which officially begins on June 1st.
